Seattle Flamenco | Performers

The Seattle flamenco scene has a great variety of performers ranging from established seasoned professionals to promising emerging artists. Here is a listing of groups and artists that are active in the area.

Groups

Barrio Flamenco
Barrio Flamenco is made up of singer Erin Lau, dancer Victoria Jacobs, and guitarist Daniel Azcarate. [admin]

Carmona Flamenco
Carmona Flamenco is the flamenco company comprised of Rubina, Marcos, and David Carmona. They perform frequently in the Seattle area, often with dancer Ana Montes. The Carmonas have appeared in Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Alicante, and Huelva, as well as San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, B.C., Portland, Tampa, and Los Angeles. [admin]

Eric & Encarnación
Guitarist Eric Jaeger & dancer/singer/guitarist Encarnación have been performing flamenco in Seattle over 10 years as well as being founding members the group Children of the Revolution. They've sold out concerts at Meany Hall, the Paramount Theater, Benaroya Hall, and the Triple Door. They tour nationally and internationally and bring flamenco artists from Spain to perform in Seattle. http://flamencoseattle.com/

Zamani Flamenco
Zamani Flamenco includes dancers Zánbaka and Dani Serrano and guitarist Andy Fitzgerald. They often perform with vocalist Marta Sivertsen. [admin]

Singers

Rubina Carmona
Rubina Carmona began her studies in San Francisco, first travelling to Madrid to study in 1965. She and Marcos spent years studying and performing in and around Sevilla in the l970's, Rubina studying extensively with Matilde Coral, and cantaor Joselero de Moron. She has maintained a parallel career in baile and cante throughout the last four decades, working in Tampa, Fla, extensively in Los Angeles, and for over twenty years in Seattle, both in concert venues and cabaret settings.

Encarnación
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Encarna is well versed in the art of flamenco; with the ability to dance, sing, and play guitar. As a core member of Children of the Revolution, Encarnación has and continues to tour around the world, and perform in flamenco shows with her husband/flamenco guitarist, Eric Jaeger. http://flamencoseattle.com/

Stephanie Hughes
Stephanie Hughes performs regularly with La Peña Flamenca de Seattle and formerly sang with Andalibre. Stephanie also occasionally sits in with other groups and musicians. [admin]

Erin Lau
In addition to singing with Barrio Flamenco, Erin Lau also sometimes performs with La Peña Flamenca de Seattle and occasionally sits in with other groups. [admin]

Esther Marion
Esther Marion has sung and danced in the past with the groups Cafe Cantante and Andalibre. She currently performs frequently in Seattle with various musicians and dancers. [admin]

Dancer Savannah Fuentes performs with a number of musicians and dancers in the Seattle area. She also occasionally hosts performers from California, BC, and Spain. [admin]

Maria Gitana
Dancer-choreographer Maria Gitana founded the company Flamenco Gitana, incorporated in the state of Washington in 2004. It has been endorsed by King County since 2005 in their Touring Arts Roster. The company is dedicated to educational programs. Lecture demonstrations, educational concerts, and workshops are age appropriate, preserve and promote Spanish culture and reinforce the value of multiculturalism. Ana Montes
Ana Montes has a long history of flamenco dance performance both in Seattle and abroad. Ana frequently performs with Carmona Flamenco. [admin]

Guitarists

Mario Amaya
Mario Amaya is one of several Seattle area players who had the opportunity to study guitar in Spain in the 1970s, during which time he was able to study with legendary Morón de la Frontera guitarist Diego del Gastor. He performs occasionally in the Seattle area. More information at http://www.marioamaya.com

Daniel Azcarate
Emerging guitar player Daniel Azcarate plays with the cuadro Barrio Flamenco and also works as a soloist.

Marcos Carmona
Marcos Carmona began his flamenco guitar career in San Francisco, and spent most of 1970-73, and later in 1978, in and around Sevilla, studying and performing, exclusively with all-Gypsy troupes, in order to incorporate the most authentic sound. He and his wife Rubina have performed extensively throughout Spain and the U.S., notably in Tampa, Fla. and for many years in Los Angeles. Marcos has been based in Seattle since 1988, performing in such venues as the Broadway Performance Hall and Kirkland Performance Center on many occasions, as well as in many cabaret settings.

Andre Feriante
Andre Feriante blends classical, jazz and flamenco influences to create his own unique style. He performs regularly in Seattle and abroad. [admin]

Andy Fitzgerald
Seattle guitarist Andy Fitzgerald performs throughout the Pacific Northwest as a soloist and with ensembles Zamani Flamenco and La Peña Flamenca de Seattle. Andy began his study of flamenco abroad (in Spain and France) and has worked more recently with maestros in the Seattle area. Andy plays a wide range of traditional flamenco inspired and influenced by the contemporary masters. Eric Jaeger
Eric has been playing professionally and teaching for over 20 years. He has lived and studied extensively in Andalucía, Spain. His most influential teacher has been Martín de la Revuelo of the famous gypsy flamenco family los Revuelo. Eric returns to Andalucía every year with his wife to live and breathe the flamenco culture with their friends and family in Sevilla and Barcelona. Eric performs flamenco regularly in Seattle and tours nationally and internationally with Encarnación and with Children of the Revolution.

Rafael Vargas
Rafael Vargas has studied music at the University of Washington and performs regularly in the Seattle area, often with Esther Marion and Savannah Fuentes. [admin]

Percussionists

David Carmona
Percussionist and Cajón player David Carmona performs regularly with Carmona Flamenco as well as with his rock/hip-hop/funk bank Role:One. [admin]

Steve Roy
In addition to being involved in a number of other groups, Percussionist Steve Roy plays Cajón for La Peña Flamenca de Seattle. [admin]
